De Britto H.S. School, Devakottai

De Britto Higher Secondary School is 63 years old. It is situated in 40 acres of land on the main road to Rameswaram. It was started at the initiative of Fr. Bonhoure, S.J. in 1943.


De Britto was started with a view to helping the poor in and around Devakottai in 1943. It was then a middle school with a strength of 228 students. The permanent approval from the Government was granted in 1947. It sent 25 students for SSLC in 1948.


When Fr.T.M. Mathai, S.J. was the Headmaster the school was upgraded into Higher Secondary School. Thanks to the selfless services of Frs. Thangadurai, Albert Machado and T.M. Mathai the school has become what it is today. Now we have 1800 Students, 60 Teachers and 13 Non-Teaching Staff. De Britto has introduced Human Rights Education in 6th, 7th and 8th Std. It is also bringing out a bi-monthly “Elamai Kanal” a students magazine.


It has a galaxy of eminent old students like Mr. Tamil Kudimagan, Former Speaker and Minister of the Tamil Nadu Government, Members of Parliament like Mr. Malaichami, and Mr. Sudarshana Nachiyappan, Film Director S.P. Muthuraman, a Film Actor Mr. Vijayakanth and Gold Medal Winner at the Asian Games Charles Borremeo, Justice D. Murugesan and Illustrious Industrialists.


“Follow the Truth”(Que cum Que vera) is its motto. It aims at instilling in the young minds the value of the Truth and Practice of it in their lives.

The school has a hostel with a capacity to accommodate more then 750 students and caters to the needs of the rural students. It gives a good formation to become good citizens in aspects.


The school excels in Games and Sports. It has a standard 400 metre track with 8 lanes and spacious grounds for various games. This year 2005-2006, our players and athletes are qualified for the B.D.and R.D.tournaments in two games and in these 4X100 relay both super senior and senior, 4 X 400 relay super senior and in two individual events.

At present Br. A. Kulandairaj, S.J., Headmaster in charge is taking all possible efforts in bringing excellence in Academic and Sports performances.

Recently our Alumni, Members of Parliament Mr. Sudarshana Nachiyappan and Mr. Malaichami,I.A.S. contributed from their M.P.Fund to put up class rooms and a Computer Centre. The alma mater appreciates the generosity and gratitude of her alumni.
